A Piper J3 plane crashed in front of mourners who had gathered on Sunday to remember the victims of a plane crash on 13th October 1972. The light aircraft came down near a barbecue being held in Montevideo, Uruguay, to mark the 45th anniversary of a crash that left 29 people dead.
All the 16 survivors were among the gathering. The chartered airforce plane crashed in 1972 was carrying the Old Christians Club rugby union team from Montevideo, Uruguay, to play a match in Santiago, Chile. The plane had crashed against a mountain.
El Pais reported “Pilot Rodrigo Artagaveytia of the light aircraft was rescued from the remains of the Piper J3 plane.” The passenger’s body was found in the water on Monday. The Chilean passenger, Fernando González Foretic, had worked as a doctor to the Chilean rugby team and Santiago’s Universidad Católica football team.
Those taking part in the anniversary event on the beach witnessed light aircraft thrown into the sea 400m offshore.
The cause of the accident in not known.
