London Luton airport marks 44 months of consecutive growth in passengers travelled through the airport. In November the airport has welcomed over a million travellers for the first time. This indicates that, there is an increasing demand among passengers for air travel and it is expected by the Department for Transport (DOT), that the passengers’ demand will be doubled by 2050.
To meet the demand of the passengers, LLA is investing over £150 million to transform the airport and increase annual capacity by 50% to 18 million passengers by 2020.
As one of the UK’s fastest-growing airports, inadequate rail link to airports is a significant limiting factor preventing LLA from reaching its full potential. To solve this issue, LLA is expecting that the government to introduce a requirement within the East Midlands Rail Franchise for four trains per hour to call at Luton Airport Parkway station.
