The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has shown the greenlight to build a runway-on-sea bridge while extending the Agatti Island Airport. This will be the first runway of this kind in India. Agatti Island, is a 7.6 km long island, situated on a coral atoll in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India. It has a distance of 459 km off Kochi in the mainland.
A senior official of AAI stated that the entire project, which includes erection of pillars into the beach and shallow sea area and the construction of RCC platform, would cost approximately ₹1,500 crores. After the completion of the bridge, the runway will be long enough to operate ATR-72. Currently, the runway is small and only smaller turboprops are operated here.
Lakshwadeep is connected to Cochin by sea route. Seven passenger ships operate between the two ports and it takes 14–20 hours for the passage. These ships have modern facilities that includes entertainment area, video shows, cafeteria and offer comfortable A/C accommodation. Air India Regional operates daily ATR 42 flights from Kochi except Sunday. Flight time from Kochi is 90 minutes. Further Kochi is connected to many domestic and international destinations.
