A Sunwing plane’s tail caught on fire after it clipped a WestJet aircraft at Toronto Pearson International Airport Friday evening at 6.19pm.
According to Wesjet spokesman, the Sunwing plane reversing from the gate struck the Westjet Boeing 737-800 waiting to proceed to gate after landing from Cancun, Mexico. The 168 passengers on board the Westjet flight 2425 were evacuated on emergency slides.
Sunwing, part of the privately held Sunwing Travel Group, said there were no passengers or crew onboard its plane at the time of the collision, and that the aircraft was being towed by ground handler Swissport International Ltd.
Fire and emergency team of Toronto Airport responded immediately even though their operation was challenged by the extreme cold weather conditions. The temperature in Toronto is expected to dip below – 20 C overnight.
