Qatar Airways may buy a 25% stake in a start-up Airline in United States after being offered stiff resistance to buy up to 10 percent shares of listed American Airlines last year. Qatar Airways changed its mind after a strong opposition from AA management and bought 9.61 percent of Cathay Pacific and later 49 percent of Italy’s Meridiana last year.
The US based start-up airline is a private company and so Qatar Airways would not face the same opposition this time, said the Qatar Airways CEO Baker at an air show in Kuwait. However, Baker declined to disclose any further details about the airline and its location.
Qatar airways holding company also acquired stakes in many Airlines around the world which includes 20 percent of British Airways parent company ICAG, and 10 percent of South America’s LATAM Airlines Group with the aim of, as he said “We would be the largest carrier of the world,” and have an idea to create a virtual mega-airline.
Qatar Airways is one of the three largest Middle East airlines next to Emirates and Etihad.
