Armed police removed a British Airways pilot from the cockpit just before takeoff after rest of the crew feared he was drunk. Sussex police arrested the 48 old pilot on “suspicion of performing an aviation function when the level of alcohol was over the prescribed limit” at Gatwick airport on 18 Jan 2018.
Mauritius bound Boeing 777, flight 2063 with 300 onboard was scheduled to leave Gatwick Airport at 8.20pm on Thursday, but delayed for more than two hours due the incident. The airline found a replacement pilot and the plane eventually took off at 10.56pm and arrived in Mauritius at 2.07pm local time, on a 11 hour flight.
British Airways spokeswoman confirmed the incident and said “We’re taking this matter extremely serious and are assisting the police with their inquiries.” and added “The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority.”
