Bell V-247 Vigilant unmanned tiltrotor long-range expeditionary aircraft is progressing through the preliminary design, intended for US Marine Corps customer. The self funded programme stated in 2016 with the aim of producing an aircraft to support Maritime operations.
The V-247, unmanned aerial system (UAS), will combine the vertical lift capability of a helicopter with the speed and range of a conventional fixed-wing aircraft. “The tiltrotor is designed to provide unmatched long-endurance persistent expeditionary and surveillance capability and lethal reach, as well as runway independence to operate successfully in maritime environments and locations without secure runway availability.” reported Bell helicopters.
With the blade fold wing stow design, two aircraft can be loaded on a C-17 aircraft. Bell adopting lot of the technology from V-280 which is a progression from V-22 Osprey.
In Boeing V-22 Osprey, the entire engine assembly tilts as the aircraft transitions from fixed wing mode to helicopter mode, but on V-280, only the prop-rotors move, while the engines remain fixed, in order to improve side access to the aircraft.
