A Russian Air Force transport plane AN-26 (RF-92955) crashed in Syria on Tuesday, killing all 39 people aboard. The plane reported to have lost height on landing and crashed about 500 meters short of runway at Hmeymim airbase in Lakatia province of Syria.
The plane was carrying 33 passengers and six crew. All of them were members of the Russian Armed Forces.
Russian intervention into the civil war of Syria since 2015 has turned the tied in favour of ruling Syrian President Bashar Al Assad. Russia lost 44 Russian service personnel in two years and last month rebels shot down a Russian military jet. However. the Russian authorities do not have to disclose all deaths of service personnel in Syria as they are classified as a state secret.
UN accuses Russia of using unguided “dumb” bombs in Syria, which will miss the target and may fall into civilian targets. The eight year Syrian civil war witnessed more than 465,000 Syrians killed in the fighting, over a million injured, and over 12 million – half the country’s prewar population have been displaced from their homes.
