Sussex police removed a British Airways pilot, Julian Monaghan, 49, from the 300-passenger flight. The pilot who is a resident of South Africa, was reportedly four times over the alcohol limit when he boarded the plane.
Cabin crew members of BA flight 2063, which was bound for Mauritius, have noticed the pilot’s intoxicated state and smell, called 999 before the plane was able to take off from Gatwick Airport on Thursday morning.
A British Airways spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Julian Monaghan no longer works for the airline. The aircraft remained at the gate until an alternative third pilot joined the flight crew, which took around 2 hours. We have taken this matter extremely seriously and will continue to assist the police with their inquiries.”
