Engine flameout on Air New Zealand link Mount Cook Airlines, ATR-72 flight NZ5018 shortly after takeoff at Hawke’s Bay Airport in Napier, New Zealand.
The passenger who described the incident said “before we took off they said an engineer needed to check over the plane. They said it was all good. Then we got up and the left engine started sparking,”…”Then the engine failed and the propeller stopped. Then it was calm, calmer than I was anyway, We didn’t really know what was going on but the pilot said it was flying okay and he was just waiting for a few checks before landing,”
The aircraft safely returned to Napier Airport after a series of bangs and emitting flames from the the left engine (PW127) soon after take-off.
According to Air New Zealand, The flight NZ5018 departed Napier about 3.20pm, heading to Auckland, but returned and landed safely at 3.50pm,
