China said to have conducted the first hypersonic flight reaching Mach 6 on a test vehicle.
The Starry Sky-2, waverider was released from a rocket, and the aircraft flew independently, made large-angle maneuvers and landed as planned, all in about 10 minutes.
The aircraft could carry nuclear warheads and penetrate any current generation anti-missile defence systems.
The hypersonic vehicle uses shockwaves generated by its own hypersonic flight with the air to glide at high speed.
The hypersonic vehicles are usually powered by a scramjet engine which scoops up oxygen as it travels through the atmosphere to combust the hydrogen fuel, instead of carrying oxygen.
