British consulate in the United Arab Emirates warn travellers “If you are caught with alcohol in your blood, you can be arrested” in UAE..even when transiting through the UAE.
The consulate posted in their facebook page “If caught carrying or drinking alcohol without a licence or with alcohol in your blood, you can be arrested. It is a punishable offence to be under the influence of alcohol in public”
The posting followed after an incident where Dr Holman, who lived in UK for 20 years, travelled to Dubai with her Iranian Passport on an expired single-entry visa. Initially she was told to fly back home, but later was arrested after a blood test by local police found alcohol in her blood supply. She was held in prison for 3 days. Dr Holman said she had drank only a glass of wine on an Emirates flight from London.
Though the law is applicable to all passengers entering or transiting UAE airports without alcohol licence, all Emirati airlines, including Emirates and Etihad serve alcohol on flight bound for Dubai.
