Air France Airbus A380 flight #AF703, returned to land at Abidjan airport in Ivory Coast, following a reported compressor stall on its left engine.
The flight #AF703 departed Abidjan-Felix Houphouet Boigny Airport at 23:38 UTC on March 9. The aircraft was cruising over Niger in West Africa shortly after midnight when one of the engines failed. The flight crew decided to return to Abidjan, where it landed safely at 01:13 hours.
A photo of the engine after landing shows damage to several fan blades as well as damage to the interior of the engine.
“…I saw a ball of flame for a few seconds and then a large bang on the left side of the aircraft,”….”The plane began to roll, everything was shaking and people started to panic. The pilot came on and said, ‘We have just lost a left side engine. We are returning to Abidjan’,” Baudelaire Mieu, a journalist with Bloomberg News, told AFP.
