Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) will be renamed as “Space Jet”, the Mitsubishi Aircraft corp announced on Wednesday.
The first Japanese commercial passenger aircraft developed in 50 years comes in two versions of 70-seater and the 90-seater.
The Mitsubishi hopes to shed the poor image of the MRJ created by its prolonged development period and repeated delays to the first delivery of the aircraft.
Mitsubishi Aircraft initially planned to deliver the first MRJ in 2013 but has so far delayed its delivery five times, and is expected to delivery in 2020.
Mitsubishi Regional Jet or MRJ is a twin-engine regional jet aircraft made its first flight on 11 November 2015.
The “Space Jet” will compete with Brazil’s Embraer and Bombardier of Canada in the smaller commercial passenger jets market.
