Financially struggling Air India has grounded an Airbus A320 for more than a week, because it doesn’t have the money to replace an engine.
The plane was grounded in Vadodara for almost a week and a spare engine for this aircraft is in Delhi, but the airline was unable to get it as the airline couldn’t raise the e-way bill because of overdue GST of over Rs.100 chore ($14.1 million).
According to sources close to the airline, there are around 12 Airbus aircraft are grounded due to spares required to fix them; but the airline has no money to get them fixed.
Government of India had been seeking investors to privatise the airline, but so fas unsuccessful.
Year-on-year advance tickets bookings has declined by 10%-15%, after aviation minister said AI “would have to be closed down if not privatised.” last November.
However, the Government keep on assuring that the airline will not be shut down and will be privatised soon.
