A Spanish Canadair CL-215 water bomber crashed on a hillside while battling a forest fire in northern Portugal in the town of Lindoso on Saturday.
Both pilots were injured and one was unconscious and later died in hospital.
The downed plane had just finished a ‘scooping’ (collection of roughly 5000 litres of water) and was preparing to drop the load in an arc at the head of the fire. said Commander Pedro Araujo of the National Civil Protection Authority.
At the time of the accident, seven Portuguese and four Spanish aircraft were trying to control the forest fire.
