Air India Express Boeing 737-800 on flight #IX1344 from Dubai overran runway 10 on landing in heavy rain at Kozhikode Airport in South India.
The aircraft with 184 passengers & 6 crew on board from Dubai overshot Karipur’s table top runway and dropped about 35 feet into a gorge on Friday evening.
Kozhikode-Calicut Airport in Kerala has a single 2850 m long “table-top runway” runway which is located on a flattened hill.
India’s civil aviation minister confirms 16 fatalities, including the pilot Captain Deepak Vasant Sathe and the co-pilot in the accident and over 140 more are injured, some of them seriously.
The flight did a go around prior to landing and then came back in a figure 8 track for a second attempt to land while it was raining heavily.
The aircraft continued to run at a high speed till the end of runway after landing, skidded off and plunged down the 35ft (10.6m) slope, before breaking in two.
The flight was carrying Indian citizens back to the country under the Vande Bharat Mission, meant to bring home stranded people from other countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
